Many times, I have had comments like, she's having difficulty conceiving because she has taken too many contraceptives.
But what many do not know is that a single unprotected sex might get you infected, and if the infection doesn't come with symptoms, you might not know that you are infected.
That singular act of unprotected sex that gets you infected without being diagnosed and treated is most likely to be a cause of one's infertility problem in the long run, and not necessarily because too many contraceptives were consumed.
Therefore this campaign is to help the public be aware of this fact, and then take appropriate precautions.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has advised that it is recommended to run an STD test once every 6 months after unprotected sex. This will help detect any sexually transmitted infection in time, while you seek appropriate treatment.
Precautionary Measures
Now that you know, what are the precautionary measures to take with respect to this fact?
First, the best precautionary measure against STDs is abstinence. But in a situation where abstinence isn't easy to uphold, we can consider other measures too.
Secondly, protective measures like condom usage are advised, though many still find it uncomfortable to use. That's all fine, and no big deal because in the end, nature will still win. But if we must go unprotected, then that takes us to the third measure.
Thirdly, there is what we call Doxy Pep. It's a situation where your medical provider prescribes some doses of antibiotics like Doxy 200, which is to be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex to prevent you from being infected. This measure must be checked because abuse might result in antimicrobial resistance.
And finally, intermittent testing can help detect infections in time. In situations where an infection is detected, meet with your medical provider for the right treatment.
